temp question

99fatboy Oct 02, 2005 12:31 PM

I just got a baby blood python. I have him in a 20 gallon tank with a screen top. I am using a "red" heat bulb as the main heat source. I keep half of the screen top covered to maintain humidity at 60-70%. It tends to run a little hot on the hot side of my tank (90-95 degrees) but the cool side is fine (77-80 degrees) It is alright to keep the hot side at that temp?

Temperature

blood pythons are comfortable in the ambient cage
temperature of 78 - 80 Degree F and should not fall below 75
degree F. A basking temperature of 88 - 92 degree F keeps your
blood python healthy.

Temperature inside the cage can maintained by using ceramic
heaters or heating pads to provide choice of temperatures at
various spots in the cage. Improper temperature causes respiratory
infections to your pet. Temperature inside the cage can be
controlled automatically using thermostat.

Nocturnal blood pythons do not require ultra violet
lamps to get vitamin D-3. But aesthetic lighting arrangement inside
the cage makes the cage look better. Maintain a 12 hour on/off
cycle lighting to keep your python healthy

Lighting
Keep your light fixtures securely from the reach of the python to
avoid burn to your pet and damages to the fixtures.
Providing proper humidity for Borneo blood pythons is
important. Variations in humidity level causes respiratory
problems to your pet.

humudity:
Maintain 50% to 60% humidity inside thecage.
Using of cypress mulch or a similar substrate can be used. These
mulch has the property to tan when dry and to rich brown when
wet. This color changing gives you a visual clue to dampen the
much when required to meet the humidity level.
Having a humidity box with a plastic container with damp
sphagnum moss will be of much use. Make a hole either on the
top or on the side and place the container inside the box to
enable the python to access it. Please ensure keeping this humidity
box wet all the time. A soggy wet cage will eventually induce
bacterial & fungal infections to your pet leading to death.

i got above said info from the book http://www.pythonsecrets.com.
