Ophisaurus ventralis - Eastern Glass Lizard

I have obtained one of these species after lifting a plant holder thing, and he was under there. He was about maybe 20" long but when i grabed him from the middle of his body he broke off his tail, and it seems now, he isnt moving very much, he just sits there and acts like he has no energy, i have red that they lose energy when they lose there tails, is this true? Or is he just adapting to the tank i put him in? And how long will it also take to regrow his tail? Any information about this snake would be appreciated.
