Are you sure it's a clown? Could it be the yellow form of Hyla ebraccata? The body seems longer than most of the Hyla leucophyllata I've seen (I have a pair also). Look at this website
http://www.corcovado.org/
go to the amphibians link, they have a few pics of H. ebraccata. It does lack the red color your picture shows so you may be correct, I'm not the real expert.
No matter nice picture (as is your other).
Regards,
John
Thanks for the comments. It was found in our cabin during a recent trip to the Ecuadorian Amazon basin. I am 99% sure it was a Variable Clown Treefrog after reading the decriptions in Barlet's book 'The Reptiles and Amphibians of Ecuador'. The tell tale mark is the spot on the middle of it's upper back between it's 'shoulder blades'. The written description seems very accurate, but in pictures, since they are so highly variable, it is quite confusing.
I have otehr pictures of it, I will post a couple different angles soon.
I have not figured out what the purple spotted frog I posted below is. That was found on a palm leaf in the rain forest at about 10PM.
Tom
? Maybe a young version of H. tapichalca? Or perhaps a young version of another treefrog that has temporary color changes, similar to RETF that are on occasion all red? Not my field of expertise but a beautiful frog no matter.
just another thought on your pruple frog
