a couple of Q's for the more experienced keepers of asian waters.........

skyliner Jul 20, 2003 11:31 AM

I rescued an adult male asian waterdragon a couple of months ago and since i've had him he hasn't looked at any friut or veggies i offer him,is this ok?Also i keep him in a 4x2x2 long viv is this big enough,i must add though that he gets out in my room when my nile monitor isn't around. And finally when i first got him i only had a 3x1.5x2 which he busted his nose on,not really bad but i've been treating it for months and it doesn't seem to be healing up that quickly.
here's a rundown of his keeping conditions:
1.4x2x2 long wooden viv, front opening with 1x2x.5 as a pool.
2.ambient temps are 80 cool end-95 under basking spot.
3.Humidity sits around 45%
4.He is addicted to mealworms and looks at nothing else!

ok here is my two cents... it's ok about the fruit and veggies most of mine don't eat them...they will occasionaly eat a grape during feeding time..but that is about it... secondly he really should be in a bigger cage.. it isn't nearly as tall as it should be.. is there anyway you could double its height??? sometimes snout damage can be really stubborn...it won't ever look like it once was..how are you treating it??? does it look like there could be a secondary infection?? yor heat is good but the humidity should be a little higher for a minimum.. i myself like to keep it at 70 plus... but then again depending on where you live and the season that could be difficult. you could try using a humidifer or misting sytem.. but spraying down the cage more often will help.. ands lastely about the mealworms.. are they regular small mealies or are they supers??? my adults eat supers, crix , and an occasional pinkie..

hope that helps

anyway it's super's he's addicted to and yes i could make the viv taller only he was arescue like i said and came to me with MBD-hence he has no nails to climb,he stays on the ground or climbs up this shallow inclined branched, you should see him,i feel so sorry for him trying to shimmy up branches and going nowwhere fast,oh and i will increase the humidity but i worry if this will blow the spotlight. His nose isn,t all that bad-3 teeth missing and a few scales as well.I'm using vetadine to stop infection and daily water changes to minimise any further risk.I've had quite a few rescues in my time so i'm used to treating MBD,that was never a problem.
thanks again and i'll try to get a pic for you.

poor thing.... i suppose he's happy to have met you!!! i've only had one spotlight bust on me before.. it was the oddest thing.. and scared the s**t out of my wds...but that was a few years ago. being addicted to supers isn't that bad.. at least he will eat.. i have had a couple finicky water dragons before and that was a pain believe you me..and if he has trouble climbing that cage should be fine.. but i have an idea.. i used this on some of my "elderly" water dragons... i made a ramp and covered it in repti-carpet.. put it on a slow incline and then put a basking spot on the top.. works really well for the older or rescue dragons.... i've seen you on the collared forum.. so i figured you probably have things covered.. best of luck with him..

info and the compliment!I try to do my best by the animals i keep but sometimes you just can't beat the advise of experienced keepers yah know.He is doing ok just now i just thought maybe there is something more i could do for him,I was at the petshop the other day and noticed they've got 2 pairs of uromastyx,1 orange phase and 1 yellow phase and they look to be going down the same road as the WD but i just can't afford them, there asking for £400 for the lot thats about 900 us dollars and the animals are on deaths door.Sad as it is i think these are 2animals that will end up on the "sold" list that i've heard so much about(i've acctually seen dead animals in the viv's.Sorry for the rant and thanks for the info!

you mean about petstores.. this little mom and pop store down the street from me has a parrot and a bearded dragon that they keep for "display" items.. therefore they won't sell.. i walked in there tonight to get some feeders and after arguing with the store manager about the best way to keep the superworms alive i decided to tell him a few things about their animals too.. their poor parrot is keep in a wood box with a glass front all day like some sort of stuffed animal.. and their german gaint beardie is in a 35 gallon tank with branches fit for maybe a frog...he can't climb them and they take up the entire cage.. no place for him to run... plus the only veggie he is fed is yellow corn...ugg.... i had to get that out

btw: i could just see myself leaving that store with a huge parrot on one arm and the beardie on the other.. coming home and thinking ok what do i do now...ha!

can't wait to see those pics
