For all of you that have a bunch of leos...housing?

crazyreptilelady Oct 04, 2005 08:19 AM

I have 3 leos now. A female adult who needs to put on a little weight. A male adult (posted many times about him and probs...I syringe fed w/vitamins for 2 weeks and now he is eating like a pig and put on about 6 grams in the last 2 weeks) who is finally coming around - weights 30 grams. And their baby (mom and dad housed together when I got them even though they were a bit smaller than they should have been for breeding.) the only egg that was fertile. The baby has won me over-first baby ever for me. At 1 1/2 months old she eats mealies like crazy and is 12grams.

I would like to get more now that these guys are stable but how do people house them? Racks? Breeding groups (I do want to breed and have a pet store that would sell)? Or tanks for each. Some feedback would really help. Thinking about picking up 3-4 from a friend who can't care for them but my space is a bit limited. But the leos health comes first. Thanks

Ok when i got my first leo i knew i'd want more! I have a small rack system with 3 drawers at the moment which i can add to if needed, they are full with 2 males and a female. I also have 2 display tanks that i built, they are not that big but bigger than the drawers. I'd say go with a rack system if you need to keep to a minimum, but get the right size boxes to suit the ages of your leo's and take into consideration what size leo's you will be getting. Hope this helps, if you got any questions feel free to email me here contactus@gilberysgeckos.co.uk

I agree, racks are the best option. They are pretty simple to build. I use 12qt bins for the adults (housed seperately) and then 6qt bins for the hatchlings. Build it like a book shelf...then you can slide the bins in and out. I use the lids for extra protection, alot of people don't though. It's your choice. You can get flex-watt heat tape for the heating at www.mgreptiles.com or www.thebeanfarm.com. Use a dimmer switch to control the temp of the heat tape. Here's a pic of what mine turned out like...I can house up to 30 geckos (putting hatchlings together).

I have been keeping Leos for about 10 years now and my Leo family is up to about 30 at this time
I keep all of my Leos in aquariums/vivs and although I have been tempted several times to switch to a rack system I usually just rearrange the tanks around the house because i like the ease of just looking through the glass to see what is going on with my Leos
I also think that they do well with an outside view-that's probably just my interpretation but they do seem to look out of the vivs
A rack cetainly would take up alot less room but I really like keeping my Leos in vivs
