Coachwhip or Racer?

cmlreptiles Oct 04, 2005 09:29 AM

A friends son found this little guy, and while I'm pretty certain it's a baby eastern coachwhip, I wanted to get some other opinions. I was gonna try and get it to eat for a week or 2, and then release it if it doesn't eat.

Chris,
That is definately a baby racer. Baby coachwhips are much more slender in comparison, and with thin ragged horizontal stripes for up to at least half their length starting behind the head. Try feeding him some live crickets, or skinks, or anoles, or baby garter snakes. I have a '05 pair that I'm raising now. They are really tame for racers, have never offered to bite; but wo'nt eat ANYTHING but smaller snakes! Good luck with the little guy if you decide to keep him!
Peace,
Mike Collalto
