Skinny Newt...

Keri Jul 20, 2003 12:02 PM

Hello everyone, I've had my firebelly newt for going on 6 years now. He's always been really healthy and happy, but lately he's getting skinnier. He's alone in a ten gallon with maybe four inches of water and some good land area up on a shelf. I'm feeding him the same as I've fed him for all six years, and he's eats great, but he's started loosing weight. I've started feeding him more often (feeding him more at once didn't work out b/c he'd loose interest), but he's still not putting the weight back on. Considering he's been in the same care for six years and he's now loosing weight... do you think he's just getting old? I'd hate to think that, but otherwise he's the same old guy he's always been. Any thoughts.

By no means an expert but I have had Reptiles and Amphibians that did appear to loose weight when they got old and/or were about to die. Have you talked to a vet yet? Another possibility is he may be sick. Do you have any other pets? I just made an attempt to call my vet who is very knowledgeable and interested in reptiles and amphibians. Unfortunately they are closed today “Damn Sundays” I then placed a call to the local pet store were I get all my supplies. There is a young lady there who is very into newts and salamanders. Unfortunately there was no answer there as well. I will try to make it a point to call back in a while. Until then I suggest you converse with a vet
