Iguana depression?

bgexotics Jul 20, 2003 12:06 PM

I had an iguana donated to me who was a little skinny but otherwise healthy. He had lived in a garage before I had him with probably no uv light or anything. I kept him for a month giving him lots of food and sunlight. He was in good shape and then I had a customer who wanted him. I let him go because I knew she could care for him properly. Today she called me and said he has lost wieght, but is otherwise fine. She took him to the vet who ran tests with nothing showing up (blood, fecal, etc...) The vet then concluded that the iguana is "grieving." Now my customer doesn't know what to do. She is feeding him properly and letting him go outside some. I doubt the iguana is depressed. Anyone elses opinion?

Yes, depression is a fairly common problem in iguanas who have been given away. It usually lasts about 2 weeks.

Also, check for worms again since this little one has been quite stressed.

He was already checked for worms, but none were found by the vet. Should I deworm him as a precaution? He goes outside quite a bit. I told the girl who has him to give it a little time, he has only been gone a week.

I wouldn't bother with medicine unless there is a problem.

Another week and hopefully, he eats.
