Breeding Kenyans

tomcatwailing Oct 04, 2005 11:55 AM

I'm more or less a phantom on this forum, but watching you guys go back and forth about genetics is so impressive. More of a history guy, but would love just to have ready access to that knowledge in my head. Credits to your field, guys. People who aren't as intellegent may confuse insistance with veiled hostility, but I know it's just imporant to prove your case.

My question/comment is this: Kenyan enthusiast for years, want to try breeding for the first time this, what, Spring I think is the best time, right? Anyway, you can see the extent of my knowledge. Bottom line, my female is six yrs old and gigantic, my male is a new born anerthrystic, prob. 9/10 months or so ... very tiny, like 9inches. Will try to follow with pictures. What is the probabitlity that with good feeding he will be able to tackle her great girth by breeding season? And is that even advisable. I've heard 2-4 are the good ages for the female. Is she too old for successful breeding at 6? When I even think of pairing them, I worry she'll make a meal out of him. Thanks for the benfit of your knowledge and experience.

I'm not an expert on breeding but the male will be ready at 2 probably. Also I think she will be able to produce because I have heard that many times ppl have a 12 or 13 year old kenyan that has been producing since she was 3, but since it is first time I have heard the first is more likely to produce slugs. Sorry got to go tell more later.

There is a chance the breeding could happen. If you can get him over 12" it just might. I have never heard of a male breeding under 12", and even then it is not common. I would wait through next year to breed them. Maybe you could put them together in the fall. As you probably know, it is not difficult to change the seasonal cycles of captive snakes. My experience with Kenyans, though, is that they just like to breed. Come spring, try it, the female should be good to breed. If the male doesn't breed with her, just try half a year later. The female won't eat the male, don't worry about that. Due to age and lack of breeding, she is more likely to produce slugs then a younger proven female, but I would guess that she will still at least produce some live young the first round. Kenyan females have been known to produce at ages of over 20 years. 2-4 is just when they start breeding.

If this helps, females should be at min 200g 18" long, and males 70g 15" long.

In my opinion that is definetly not fertile. wait till next year or the year after.
