Melanistic Hog

FloridaHogs Oct 04, 2005 10:20 PM

How do you tell if a Melanistic Hog is an Eastern or a Southern? I am in NW Florida and was just curious since I have a wild rescued Melanistic Hognose. I assumed it was an Eastern, but now I am wondering? Here is a shot of her.

Melanistic easterns are well known, and common in some areas of their range. I've never heard of a melanistic southern. I'm sure there are scalation differences between the two species. From seeing both southerns and easterns, it seems that easterns have longer heads, too.

Like foxturtle, I believe that only Easterns can become melanistic. Southerns are decendent from Westerns, so they are the most similar. Check out the description of the Southern in the .pdf file below.
