I have a question regarding the business side of things...

Jonathan_Brady Oct 04, 2005 10:25 PM

Why, on people's website, do individuals who run a reptile business use the terms "we", "our", etc... instead of "I", "my", etc...? what's wrong w/ letting your buyer know that you're the sole entity there doing all the work? what's wrong w/ taking credit for your accomplishments? I just find that strange... Any theories or reasons out there?

Yeah I don't get it either. It's like they are running some sort of corporation with thousands of employees....LOL

I really have no idea but "we" would really like to get "our" hands on that Boa pictured in your post!!!!

But actually their profession is begging.

It also could be that the person running the show is giving their spouse credit opr a sibling or business partner.....that would be the most logical explanation.

Your absolutely right!!! That is why "Our" business is called "Vazquez Family Reptiles". Some people would not be where they're at without the support of family and friends. There is no way that I could take sole credit for what has been built. Without my wife and sons, there would be no Vazquez Family Reptiles. Now I may clean the cages and feed the boas, but it's my wife that listens to my ideas and supports them. It's my sons curiosity in the boas that makes them even funner to own. I think a majority of the people here have been able to do this as a hobby or business because of their surrounding people sharing in the same vision or at least understanding it. My .02 cents.

Thanks,

my wife and kids have to listen to me talking whole day about the boa,s and for about 12 years now,
so if they would not support my love for the hobby that would take half of the fun away

GOD BLESS THE FUN OFF BOA,S IN THE FAMILY

I think, as I am a practitioner of such spurious arts, is because people DO go for the "big guys" thinking (however correctly, or incorrectly) that they are somehow more reputable, or have better stock because they are more successful. This is not always the case, as many of us know. It is actually a common practice throughout business marketing to use the "Royal 'We'." Think about when you write a resume: you're the only one writing it, and it's about you, yet traditionally it is written in 3rd person ("Jeremy has developed skills in field-a through extensive work experience and is seeking employment where his aptitudes may be more fully utilized..." that kind of language) and tha'ts what is expected by employers.
This is sort of the same thing. It comes down to a marketing preference and/or strategy. I don't think anything is inherently wrong with it, although sometimes it feels strange to write that way, and sometimes I slip into 1st person myself.
That's my .02

I checked my site, and I did the same thing...sort of. My first page says "we", and all my other pages say "I". when I originally wrote the text, I used "we" on the "company" page as I would normally associate company with we...but as I wrote my "project" pages, "I" came out...lol. I think I used "we" as it portrays formality and a vast number of company sites are written in that context. I guess my wife does help me, indirectly.

But you have a valid point, I MAY change that page to "I" to maintain uniformity...

Some people also do it because most people have the tendency to go for larger companies. Ever heard the saying "Two heads are better than one"? Subconsciously (sp?) people tend to go for companies with larger workers.

Well, in my case (and if you look through my web site you find where I switch back and forth from "we" and "I" I give my wife credit also as she does tend to help me at times. I would imagine that many others do the same. The other reason is that some guys just don't want to known as small. I personally am proud to be a small breeder and not a huge snake factory. I feel I am able to give better individual care for my snakes, mainly because they are my snakes, not just some guy's collection that I am working for at $6.00 per hour.
Just my thought

I started this business with my son. He passed away 2 years ago but I will always view this as our business.

The second reason is that my small breeder business recquires help, patience and some sacrifice from my family and I consider them to be an integral part of the business. There are financial demands that could be put into other things. Vacations have to be planned around breeding times etc. Most important of all is the time requirement which is the most valuable resource of all. When I get home from my day job as a surgical pathologist there are variable time demands in the snake room which, as we all know, can be unpredictable. Then there are phone calls, e-mails etc which all take time. Having my family "on board" with the business is a big help and it would be very difficult without their support. So for KRBS HERPS although the breeding plans and
choices are mostly mine the end result is due to our collective effort.
