Darth Vader snake

A friend and I caught this 63 in Black Racer yesterday. I normally wouldn't have bothered but he was a personal record so I brought him home. What are the chances he will adjust to captivity?? He is very alert but does not seem to be feaking out as i would expect. My friend is the only one I know that has gotten a wild caught adult to eat in captivity...anyone else have any luck? Thanks!

The Racer ate this morning! I put a F/T mouse in there last night and he smelled it a couple times when he cruised around but didn't seem too interested. I was checking this morning to see take it out if it was still there and I just happened to catch him finishing it!

Very good! I live in Southern Black racer country and so often ours are fixated on lizards (even larger ones). Though I knew one 6 footer that took mice out of it's owners hand (but that was a long term captive).

Thanks for the reply Frank! The racer ate two more F/T mice today so I am faced with decision of keeping him or turning him loose soon. It does seem to have adjusted to captivity better than I would have expected.

Hey...If it is eating mice and calming...it's a keeper!

I agree. I recently caught a Buttermilk Racer ( my family calls them Celestial Whipsnakes because they look like the night sky). He's pretty calm, but he still is skittish when I handle him. He's small, but he is eating crickets. He's living with my Eastern Box turtle, and sometimes I see him basking on her back. It's strange. Right now I'm debating about freeing him. They get along, but he's one of those bite whenever. It doesn't hurt, and I'm sure he'll grow out of it, but I may end up with a baby Bearded Dragon, and I'm contemplating if I should free him and just have 3 reptiles..
