New F1 Okeetee Cornsnake

Keith Hillson Oct 05, 2005 04:02 PM

Just got a pair of 2005's from my buddy Peter Jolles at East Coast Colubrids. They have great color and come from a male that was wildcaught right in the Okeetee Hunt Club and the female is unknown locale Okeetee. Anyway the babies from the pairing are beautiful and I anticipate them getting brighter and brighter with each shed. Im more of a Kingsnake guy but I do like the Okeetee's.

Very Nice Keith. He will look like the one in this pic one day I'm sure: (A Abbott line male okeetee). I bred him with a wildcaught (heavily scarred) female Okeetee that I got from a petstore a while back. I got 22 AWESOME looking babies. I'll probably post pics of them this weekend.

This is my "Golden corn" I told you about, laying next to a normal corn that I found in the same area:
I bred her and have 12 healthy babies (lost one due to refusal to eat ANYTHING)

OK, so tell the rest of us the story on it.....

The snake was wild caught by me last September (23rd) about 6 miles from my house (south of Fayetteville, Cumberland county, NC.) near the Cape Fear river in a large unpopulated area. I am currently checking to see if this golden color trait is genetic by breeding her to a male that I found about a quarter of a mile away. She had 13 babies, only one flatly refused to eat and eventually died. The babies are all normal looking, so now I'll grow them up and do some backbreeding to prove out this "golden" trait. So, in about two years I should know something. . .

You sure it's not "Photoshop" phase? lol

NO, sorry. I'm too old and mature to waste my and other people's time about "creating" fake pics. What would I posssibly gain??? Embarassment, laugh of the town, loss of business - Think about it for a minute. The only thing I would accomplish is to make a fool of myself. . . Ask Peter Jolles (East Coast Colubrids), Michael Coone (WesternNC), Todd Hughes (Antelope). They were at my house and saw the snake in person.
You are welcome to come by in person and see for yourself if you ever pass through NC. (I don't even know where you're from).
But seeing something that has NEVER been seen before will always bring doubt in most. I understand that, and I'm not offended whatsoever. Heck, I wouldn't believe it either (if someone posted only one pic of a uniquely colored snake) until I got more pics/evidence/witnesses/seeing it in person. So, hopefully you can come by one day and see for yourself - Several people on here already have. . .
Here's an outdoor pic (Sorry my camera is not the greatest, only a $200 special):

Peace-

Neat looking animal. It reminds me a LOT of some of the first images of caramel corns that were circulating out there years ago. Good luck - hope it turns out to be a simple recessive gene for you.

I'd "suggest" testing it by breeding it to a Caramel corn at the first opportunity, too. Hopefully, it'll be a new gene.

Thought it was a caramel too at first. . .But don't the normal caramels have yellow background and dark blotches - Not yellow blotches and a dark background like this one???

I wasn't meaning to say you were dishonest. Some people just like to prank, you understand.

Anyway, if you can reproduce that snake, you could get $1000 apiece! Silver and Gold like that??

I was just wondering, If you don't mind shareing what kind of offers have been made on this snake and/or it's offspring? Just curious to know....

They can be pretty variable. I "hope" ist is a new trait, but I do believe it would be worth checking against a caramel before letting your hopes get up too high.

Hell, what am I saying? Just catching it would have gotten me higher than a kite! LOL.

Congrats again, and GOOD LUCK.

zee, sorry to hear about the one "golden" baby, what other morph you got?

antelope Oct 10, 2005 05:33 AM

She's the real deal allright! Man, Zee, I hope some of those babies carry that gene. Did you ever post those babies? Don't knock this snake 'till you've seen it! She is a screamer and truely a one of a kind.....for now!

That is a really beautiful F1. I presume by F1 you mean from wild-caught parents? I had a deal with Peter over this summer, and at the time I had a problem shipping from my area, and he was very patient, even kind about it. Of course I did give him a pair f locality Great Basin Gophers for free, but he was way cool about the wait, which was almost 2 months! (boy, that sucked!) I think Peter is definitely one of the good guys, and would recommend him as such.

Peter is definitely one of the best breeders on the east coast. I met him at a show in VA as I am stationed at the Pentagon and I have seen his collection. He has some awesome kings too.

Keith Hillson Oct 08, 2005 12:31 AM

No the Father is a WC while the Mother is CB. To be considered an F1 only one parent has to be wild, at least thats what Ive always known but I could be wrong

Hey Keith I think mine are brother and sister to yours. My female is getting huge. Are you going to the Havre de Grace show tomorrow?

norsmis Oct 07, 2005 10:14 PM

She is getting huge! Peter has some of the best looking oketees around...

Keith Hillson Oct 08, 2005 12:29 AM

Peter is a good guy for sure. No I wont be at that show its too long a drive from Wisconsin ! lol Ive heard that its a real good show from more than one person. Your Corn is very nice looking we will have to post back in a year or so and see how they are looking.
