It is very real. Anacondas in the wild regularly take spectacled caiman and others as prey. Burms will take whatever they can, but sometimes with a large bull gator might get a bit more than they bargained for.

If you look at the pictures, you can see that the gator was way too far down inside the snake to still be alive and kicking. It would have suffacated long ago. One of the theories is that it ate an already dead gator and the decomposition gasses built up so much that the snake literally exploded. It's common in hot weather.
