Gator snapper handling

goini04 Oct 05, 2005 07:34 PM

Hey guys,

I was wondering if someone could give me the correct way to safely handle an Alligator Snapping turtle? I have heard of several different ways and I am wondering which one is more the "Tried and True" method.

Thanks,

Chris

it depends on the size. they cant reach around like the commmons can so for small to medium you can just grab them on the back half of the shell. what methods have you heard? it can also be different depending on whether you are just moving it or using it to show people such as in a reptile educational program.

Hello Chris, check out Tektum's aug.16th post below. For large snappers one hand at the front of the shell and one hand at the other end of shell is the safest way to go on allys. Just keep the elbows and forearms out of the way! Large common snappers in my opinion are alot harder to lift safely unless they are tame.

I appreciate your responses. I have heard of the one hand on the back and one hand on the front being the best method for alli snappers. Is it true that common snappers have a better reach with their extended necks? I am primarily a crocodilian keeper, so the typical method with them, is simply avoid contact with their teeth at all costs. I have heard of lifting snappers with their tails, but I hear that this can damage their spine...so I dont wish to hurt an animal, especially if it's going to be kept in captivity.

Thanks for the help!

Oh yeah, I viewed that post you directed me to. That is an amazing snapper!

commons definitely have a better reach. i lift my common by the tail but its only 4-5" so theres not much weight to pull on the spine and would not do it once it is much bigger. it does have quite a reach thoug.
