Sexing....?

RaffertyReptiles Jul 20, 2003 02:23 PM

I have had my bearded dragon for almost two years now, and i got him when he was just a baby. The breeder i got him from told me he was a male and he said he could tell just by the fact that his head was broaded than all the other bearded dragons in the same cage. He explained that males will have much broader heads than females. Being that this was my first dragon i didn't know too much on the subject of breeding or sexing i just knew how to take care of one so i just assumed he was right. But now I am looking to get another bearded dragon to have a breeding pair and so i was looking for a female still assumeing i have a male but today i decided to take a closer look. I looked at the pictures on the S&S leopard gecko site (it is also a bearded dragon site) so i looked at the sexing pictures and the males have two pronounced buldges before their vents so i looked at my bearded dragon and it isn't completely flat before the vent like a females would be but his buldges seemed very small almost like superficial i can't tell wether they really are buldges or whether that i am just looking for buldges since i've thought hes been a male this whole time.. you know what i mean? does anyone have any advice for me cause it is really tricky to tell whether its male or female.

The male bulges are usually pretty prominent with a valley in the middle. Another male trait is the pores along the inner rear legs. Again, males are very prominant. It's a little hard to tell since you have nothing to compare it to. Here's another sexing sexing pic that may be helpful.
