Yes, the mesh was attached with staples. I got the wood at Home Depot, I just found a long stick about the right thickness in the molding area and cut it to size after I had the wire mesh put together. I put the wood pieces together with a corner vice, using wood glue and a small nail on each corner. After I got the wood put together I filled any gaps in the corners with woodfiller, and then sanded it smooth. I sand the corners and edges rounded too, I just like the way it looks that way. To attach it to the cage, I drill two holes with a recess drill bit, on on the top, one on the bottom, put a bolt thru there, putty over the holes, and sand smooth. You can then drill a hole in the cage, push the bolts thru and put a wingnut on the back for when you need to change the bulb. I suppose it would depend on your set up, you might need to use wood screws and leave them visible, so you can drill them into place and remove them as needed. I painted mine to match the outside of the cage. They sell rubber coated wire mesh, it's a little more expensive, I've never used it, but I bet that would be the best way to go.
