How can I get my leopard gecko to lay her eggs?

spongecrazy Oct 06, 2005 07:42 AM

My female leopard gecko hasn't layed her eggs. I've bred her before with success a couple of times now, but this is the first time that she has gone a long time without laying her eggs. I live in New York so I'm thinking that the change in weather may have halted her from laying them. I keep a heat mat on 24/7 on one side of her 50g tank. The entire tank never gets below 72 degrees. Her egg laying spot that i built in her tank stays a constant 82 degrees. She goes in her egg laying spot, digs around like usual and then falls asleep. The next day no eggs. I see the eggs in her...What can it be?

I would say your temps are too low. The warm side should stay 88-90 degrees, 82 is definately not warm enough. The cool side should be 78-80 degrees, 72 is too low.

If the temps are too low than how would you explain my previous breeding and hatching of eggs with success using the same temps?

Are you measuring temps with a digital therm w/ a probe, or a temp gun? If not maybe when she laid before the temps were actually higher than you realized at those times. I'm not saying temps are "the" reason she's not laying, just saying your temps are too low. But the temps could have an effect.
