I presume you need a digital camera (you'd be crazy if you don't want one, they're the most important invention since the aquaduct)
It depends greatly on what you want to take pictures of, and what your target price is. If you e-mail me, I'll give you some general advice.... okay here's some.

Digital zoom is useless, forget about it, unless you want poor quality images. You have all of the "digital zoom" you need on your computer.

Most lenses are very similar (Bausch&Lomb) , Sony has high-end German lenses, and so do many of the better Nikons.
Pentax makes the HP cameras, mostly, as I understand it, so compare prices on those 2 brands if you are considering one or the other.

Just go here: Digital Photo Review and you can read yourself silly. That's a great site. The most important thing is to get enough optical zoom for whatever your shooting, and perhaps, for close-ups of your snakes, a good macro feature. I use Macro all of the time...
I have an HP 945, which is a great camera for the money, or, that is, was a great camera for the price 6 months ago...
6 months is an entire product cycle in consumer electronics now. (cameras move a bit slower, though) so things could have changed quite a bit since I was last shopping for one.

(I am a professional full-time geek btw, and I used to sell this stuff...)
