Hibernation Options?

dubumb Oct 06, 2005 02:24 PM

I'm looking into getting another tegu. Last year I had an argentine black and white, but he unfortunately never woke up from hibernation. I was curious as to whether or not it is manditory to let them hibernate and what my options are as far as hibernation and do reds and blues hibernate also? Thanks in advance..

Attached it a picture of my old baby when I first got him--I wish I had taken some pictures after he fattened up and grew--

I was wondering about the also. I am getting my tegu probed on friday by a vet out here to determine the sex. Once I figure it out I was thinking about getting another one for a mate. I have been talking to Bert at agama international.( he has some arg B&W now) and he told me that if I plan on breeding I need to hibernate it. He said it was esp important to do so in this first year. If I go the new one. The problem is I havent hibernated mine so does it really matter if you hibernate them or can I wait till they get to a nice size like 3' plus after 2 years and then try to hibernate them. It just worries me hibernating them cause I do know what to do.. how to go about it.
Anyone know what to do or that can give me some tips advice?

Anytime you force hibernate lizards they could die on ya. I would say to let the tegu tell you if it wants to hibernate. If it does dont lett the temps go under 70 degress. Thanks Russ

Russ, do you or have you hibernated your Argentinian B&W? Is it a necessity? I don't plan on breeding mine, and to have it as a pet would suck to have it sleeping or 6 months. --Joe

No I dont force Hibernate Santiago. He bermated for 9 days last year on his own,(just did not eat). I keep the temps and the lenght of time the lights are on(13 hrs) year round . If he sleeps on his own ,. thats up to him. russ

I didn't force hibernate the tegu... He just started fasting then burrowed and I decided not to wake him or anything incase he was hibernating... Turns out he was but eventually died.
