Slugs and Stillborn Babies

Jeff Clark Oct 06, 2005 02:33 PM

...One of my three year old BRBs laid part of her litter early this morning. 3 slugs and 2 very premature stillborn babies. The "mom" looks okay. I will leave her alone and hope that she carries the rest of the litter to term. I have only a couple times in the past had snakes lay part of a litter prematurely and then lay the rest fullterm several weeks later. More typically the rest of the litter gets laid within a couple of days with all premature babies and slugs. I think slugs are the problem. Most of my prematurely laid snakes and nearly all of my fullterm stillborns have been in litters with high percentages of slugs. Breeding snakes produces some good results and some bad results.

ups and downs of breeding, been there done that, this year even. Hope the mom is ok and that she's got some viables still to go.

Still on baby watch here, mom may be moving around a little more, not sure if she's really moving more or I'm just noticing it being anxious and all. No significant cruising and no passing of urates so don't expect them sny time real soon....argh!!

Sorry to hear that Jeff. On the bright side, the female is O.K. and it sounds like you've had a productive year otherwise. I always get so nervous when my female (snakes) are about to give birth.
