Which turtle to get?

buffysmom Oct 06, 2005 06:14 PM

I'm contemplating adding a turtle to my "zoo" & am wondering if there are any nice terrestrial (I don't want an aquatic) turtles that can live their lives in a 20L tank?

The short answer is NO, and this comes from a man who is an advocate for limited housing space (as opposed to unrealisticly huge setups). Unless you start with a very small juvenile and move it up as it grows, this is too small for an adult terrestrial. What did you have in mind? There are few really small terrestrials and these are VERY expensive and delicate (dwarf tortoises) and NOT for first time keepers.

Oh, like a box turtle or some such thing. I haven't really started looking yet. We had an Eastern Box when I was growing up & she was quite nice. I think I'll have a 4'x2' cage open soon, that ought to cover most terrestrial turtles for their lives, right? I don't want a tortoise, just a turtle... Any suggestions?

4X2 is fine for a box turtle, but you will probably have to "order out" (with the accompanying high shipping expenses) if you want an Eastern. Most boxies in retail pet stores are three-toed (a bit less low-temperature tolerant) and a rare Gulf Coast on occassion. Check out the turtle classifieds on Kingsnake, if you want to price one.

Thanks. I have decided on an Eastern from the classifieds here.

I have a pair of Eastern from West Coast Constrictors. I named them Gamera and Gheedra and they are a delight.
