Dills (PTS) other foot...with the "bad toe"

icequeen Jul 20, 2003 03:10 PM

This is Dills other foot (right foot was posted in "dills message to her previous owner" thread).
This is the foot that continues to cause problems. That one toe is useless to Dill, and just flops around. The skin never comes off easily during a shed, and has to be worked off with my fingernail and/or a toothpick. The claw is deformed and only grows at a fraction of the rate of her other claws. When I got her, this toe was swollen to three times the size it is now, and had severe cellulitus. It was bright white below the band of skin...the band itself was, and remains, black. It does appear right now that the toe is beginning to swell again...just ever so slightly. If it requires veterinary care this time around, I think we will finally decide to amputate it.

Hi KIM,

I would say to amputate it. Dill has the other 2 phalanges fortunately -but that one is a 'Burned Unit'. With the 2 phalanges on that foot and the one on the other, does dill manage to climb alittle?

Sincerely,
Brian

Hi! IMHO/if this was my PTS--- I would ask your vet to amputate it- I wouldn't worry TOO much about how she will get around without the digit, as it isn't helping her much right now. I am caring for an adult PTS "louise" who is missing an entire back leg. She gets around fine! She is slower to climb than her cage mates, but she always gets where she wants to go.
Best wishes, Jess b
