That show did suck which is why I said that. My loyalty is to who puts on a worthwhile show where I can make money, advertise and talk to some people. If that show by my friend, as you call him, is as slow in january when he puts it on again it is quite likely I will not be back there again. It costs too much to drive all over the countryside to sit on my rear for two days, eat, hotel, etc. to continue attending a show without a future. Too many shows in the Columbia area again. 3-4 (total) a year spread out evenly is all that area can stand. It is very quickly getting back to the old McKnight show days. Randy had a great show for several years. Then it got WAY too often and it very quickly went straight into the can. Soon we will have shows 10 times a year in that area from 3 different promoters and I will go back to not attending any of them. Friends or not. Tony knows this by the way because I have told him.
As for the face painting, I have mixed feelings on all of that but it did work very well in Raleigh for many years to bring in a big crowd. Many of which purchased from me and made that show quite profitable and fun. Whether or not the face painting, etc. contributed to the sales I do not know since we havent had the opportunity in that market to find out how we would do without it. If it wouldnt affect sales with its removal I would be all for it going away. I do recall selling several cornsnakes, kings, and leos to beginners there who had never owned a reptile before. Now that I sell a lot less of those items it is less critical to me but still quite important to many of the vendors.
I also deal very closely with one of Cathys "sponsors" on a regular basis. I did not get my info from the other promoters website or any other BS gossip column. I got it straight from them. Cathys interpretation of sponsorship seems to differ quite a bit from what most would consider sponsorship, including some of her sponsors. Is it an offense punishable by death? No, of course not. Is it hijacking a known name (they spend quite a bit of $$ to make it a known name)to push your agenda, yes. Is it "creative" advertising that is perhaps a little too creative. I think so. In my opinion, it is yet one more dramatic twist in a mutual backstabbing contest between two people with nothing better to do than scheme and go to war. There simply doesent need to be this much drama on either side of the fence and while I have a side I prefer that will change if the drama doesent end. One or both of them needs to just stop the fun, ignore the other and move on.
I wish you and all of the other vendors at the Columbia show the best of luck. I have no reason or desire to see you have a bad show. I simply have had just about all of the drama out of the growing number of children in the promo business and am doing something to help. I am not supporting atleast one of them.
