EXMOUTH JOURNAL (UK) 06 October 05 Making the open road safer for Mr Toad
Toads in Woodbury Salterton will soon enjoy a less perilous journey to their breeding grounds thanks to a campaigning village resident.
Sally Elliott has successfully petitioned Devon Highways Authority to erect 'toad crossing' signs near her home in White Cross Road to warn drivers of the amphibians' presence.
Mrs Elliott said: "I was coming home late from a meeting a couple of winters ago when I came across all these lovely, colourful toads hopping across the road. I was amazed.
"It was a mild February and so the toads had just awakened from their hibernation and were hopping to their favourite pond across the road.
"I picked up the toads and put them down on the other side of the road in the direction they were facing.
