Bird Seed for Uros? And which beans to feed

AlteredMind99 Oct 07, 2005 01:14 PM

So Im stil on my quest for Uro info, allthough each day i feel like i am more and more prepared. I just ordered a Mega-Ray MV bulb for him, and have set up part of the tank.

My confusion still lies mainly in diet,

I have the veggies and insect part down...

But what about seeds and beans?

Which brand of bird seed to people use? I looked on the Deer Fern Farm caresheet and they said they used Pretty Bird finch seed, but i looked up that product online and it looks like it might contain sunflower seeds, which i thought were bad? What are some general seeds to stay away from?

I know understand how to prepare the beans (gind them up raw!) but i was wondering if anyone has a list of appropriate beans to feed

Thanks!

i think elizabeth told you to stay away from sunflower seeds and cracked corn, pretty bird probably comes with and without sunflower seeds, but i have never really looked.
alot of what you will end up feeding them depends on what they will eat. they can be picky and certainly have favorites. my guys only eat peas and lentils when it comes to dry food. i tried feeding them 15 bean soup mixes and they just pick out the peas and lentils and kick the rest around, sometimes they eat the white ones in there
as for beans, i think kidney beans should be left alone (or am i thinking of the wrong thing). i have tried giving them bird seed and they pretty much ignore it, all brands, so i have some well fed wild birds.

If your uro is old enough for seeds, the common "dry" mix is red or brown lentils, split yellow peas, split green peas, finch seed, bee pollen granules, juvenile iguana pellets, pretty bird, etc. Sunflower seeds and cracked corn are not used due to potential problems with their sharp edges. To clarify, pretty bird is a colored, pellet form of bird mix, no seeds at all. It comes from a tiny size for finch or canaries to a large size of assorted fruit shapes for large birds. If you have a little one, you can mix any or all of the above into a ground form and offer it in a dish. I, personally, do not give any "dry" mix to new wc until they are eating their greens well as I want them to be hydrated properly. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Oh, i see. So the rainbow bird pellets can be fed?

What about this brand: http://petco.com/Shop/Product.aspx?Nav=266&sku=844721&R=472&enemerch=1&redirectURL=%2fShop%2fProductList.aspx%3fPC%3dproductlist%26Nav%3d266%26N%3d25%2b92%2b30%2b4294966451

Im definately not going to be getting a WC only a CB, is there a certain age i should wait before offering seeds and beans?

So if i offer a dish of iguana pellets, finch seed (no sunflower seeds!!), and ground bean mix that should be sufficient to cover the seed/bean portion of the diet?

I would stick to the Pretty bird finch food, unless you are going to grind up the iguuana pellets too. My juvie will do just about anything for some of the finch food, not that I blame him, it smells like Froot Loops!

Did you ever get a response about the insects? Uros actually tolerate animal protein better as juveniles than as adults. I have chosen not to offer mine insects at all, so other than crickets I am not sure what becomes an acceptable food source. That is the nice thing about the bean and pretty bird supplements, they contain more protein than a straight greens diet, without having to deal with crickets, etc.

What I was told was to move to the Juvenile iguana pellets at about a year old or so... which means Mosca is about ready to make the move. I assumed that was due to the size of the pellets, though it may have other nutritional considerations as well. I do not really know.
