fox snake breeders ?

simias Oct 07, 2005 03:03 PM

I'm a veteran snake keeper (mostly Pituophis and Drymarchon) and just acquired my first fox snake (eastern subsp., male). Does anyone know of any breeders of these guys, in hopes of finding a cb female, eastern or western ?

thanks

Hello, Simian,
You probably don't need this but you may want to look at these two posts back in April.

The post by Bill raises some valid points. The various state regs make collecting nearly impossible. I believe Jim Sargent at Split Rock has genuine Easterns, and I work with them also. They are a favorite of mine. I think they are more like pines than rats. Sort of like cornsnakes on steriods. Some of the westerns I've seen are gorgeous too.

I live here in Illinois. Normally I collect a few gravid females each year and hatch out the young. I usually release all the young but have kept/given a few away on occasion. There is one guy that breeds them and post on the classifieds. Many say they have trouble getting them to eat but every one I ever had ate f/t. They are awesome snakes to work with. Here is a pair I had two years ago.

Mike
