Why would a turtle soak for longer than normal??

Annette Oct 07, 2005 03:45 PM

I have a female eastern boxie that has been extremely healthy for about 6 years now. She lives outside and seems to thrive. She has been soaking in her water for about 4 days now. She will come out of the water on her own to eat (and she eats like a horse), but then she goes back and soaks. I have taken her out and sat her way across the pen and she comes right back. I thought she may have gotten into some ants (I posted a question about the ants a few days ago, but now I don't think that's the case). Obviously, there is a problem. Anyone got any suggestions?

The only suggestion I can think of is to see a vet & have a check up. Sudden odd changes in behavior raise a red flag for me. Red flags make me go to the vet for my own peace of mind if nothing else.

Then I read further down & saw that golfdiva found her turtle doing that to keep the ants off. Do you see any ants out there still? Could it be that your turtle is keeping them washed off by soaking too much?

We have had quite a bit of rain in the last 48 houurs and so the ant hill seems to be washed out for the time being. I did not see any ants yesterday or today at all. I also do not see any bites on her.

One of the reasons I have waited on taking her to the vet is that she is eating like normal. Today when I took the food out, she came out of the water immediately to get her food. Then an hour later when I went back out, she was right back in. Maybe I'll take her in on Monday. Thanks.
