Spike Question

tanias16 Oct 07, 2005 06:15 PM

I unintentionally hijacked someone else's thread so I'll post this here instead.

I was just wondering why some have very short green spikes and some have very very long thin brittle looking ones?
My male has short green spikes whereas the picks posted of the Female turned Male CWD only a few threads down has long brown spikes that are much longer.

My CWD is 4yr male...

It's quite possible you have a female. If you could post a picture, we could tell you for sure (provided it's really 4 years old).

This is a really old picture, but it is all I have with me right now. I'm not sure how old he was here. I will post a more recent one when I get home.
I'll admit, you've got me a little freaked out.

My vote is female.

How old was Jake in this picture??? This picture is exactly what Charlie looks like, and s/he just turned two this month. On another site, everyone voted Female. But, s/he has developmental delays, due to an undiagnosed parasite infection (long story.) His crest has grown quite a bit since the meds, the past few weeks.

But, the recent pic of Jake is soooo obviously male! Wow! Pretty dragon! I am just so tired of not knowing for sure . . . drats!

Your dragon may be female, or have spike damage. Males have long spikes and females have short ones.

Here is a photo of my male, he was only a year old or so.

He is definitely atleast 4 years old. I do not have any updated pictures with me, however. I will get some from home asap.
I seriously doubt Jake is a girl.

I think this is definetely a male because he has a big crest and pretty long spikes on it.

I posted new pictures in a new thread entitled Jake the Male Waterdragon. Check them out.

Why is it that some males have very long brittle spikes while others do not?
You can see my 4 yr old male CWD as an example of shorter spikes, these are several images here and in the gallery of males with longer spikes.

Mostly it's genetic, some have suggested that a multimineral suppliment will increase the size of them, but I have seen any research on it.
