Need help with tank idea

huhwhat Oct 07, 2005 06:15 PM

I was recently given a 150 gallon aquarium that measures 48" long x 24" wide x 31" tall. I am using it for my Mali Uromastyx. Currently, it is in the upright position, giving the lizard 8 sqft. of floor space. I am considering tipping the tank on it's side and building a new front (top) for the tank. This would increase the space for the lizard from 8 sqft to about 10.3 sqft. The main problem is figuring out how to suspend the lighting fixture inside the tank.

What do you folks think? Am I out in left field here?

Try making a wood frame and using medium size ckicken wire.Place the heating lights on top. Add a door and by using small link chain and S-hooks you hang a UV fixture from the inside. For cleaning remove the heat lamps, open the door unhook the UV remove the top. Also the door allows for feeding without removing the top. Hope this idea works out.

I don't think that glass aquariums are designed to support weight on their sides. I have considered it before. If you were given the 150 gallon, maybe contact a local, private pet store and see if you can trade the 150 gallon for something better suited.

I had considered the support issue, and I think if I build a stour frame to fit in the opening, it would take care of the problem.

Now, I may get some flack for this because I know bigger is always better... However if you are otherwise willing to acept the limitations of an open topped cage, I think that 4x2ft is plenty of room for your mali Uro to run around very happily! Much less pain and effort, then you can spend more time on fun cage furniture for your friend.

My (possibly unpopular, but pragmatic) 2 cents.
