New to forum - some Thayeri breeding stories???

aerosa1 Oct 07, 2005 06:41 PM

Hi everyone,

I've recently discovered Thayeri and look forward to receiving my first from Vivid Reptiles in a few weeks. I have no idea how I managed to overlook these guys for so long. They are BEAUTIFUL. I can't wait to play with all those color options.

I'm a CA native who fell in love with Kingsnakes at age 8, when my father and I rescued one from a cat.

Although I've kept snakes most of my life, I've never bred them. I've been told Thayeri are a nice first-time project: easy to keep, docile, and colorful suprises in every batch.

I'd love to hear how some of you first started out your breeding projects.

Thanks for sharing

Welcome to the forum Rose. Sorry to hear about your newly aquired addiction.

I'm not really sure if I have any interesting thayeri breeding stories to share. Here's what I usually do.

I raise them up until they weigh 250-300 grams. Cool them to about 46-55 degrees F for about 10-12 weeks during the winter. Bring them out of brumation around the 1st of March. Feed them alot. Put the male in with the female and show them a snake porno movie. Sometimes a small hot tub helps too. I used to provide cigarettes for afterward but they kept catching the bedding on fire.

Anyone else have some other helpful hints?

PS: Just kidding about the last part there Rose. Welcome again to the forum. Post some pics of your Vivid babies when they come in

Chris

You gotta pop in a CD of either The Best of Marvin Gaye or The Best of Barry White!!! Gotta pre-heat the oven before you put in the meat man! LOL.

Rose, Kidding aside. Chris' recipe if pretty much what I do also. You can also feed the females rat pups instead of mice to get them in good weight for breeding. Be careful though, since feeding too much rat may lead to a fat snake. Rats are heavier and has more meat than mice of the same size. Also the males would shut down during breeding becasue he's looking for the females. In addition, from my experience an fat male sometimes does not do well in breeding than a lean muscular male. But wait! Isn't that the case for everything? hehe. Anyway, welcome to the board and always come to join in the fun. Warning, we have a lot of crazies around here, my self included. Take care.

Hi there. Welcome, and congrats on your new discovery! And thanks for asking us to share.

My terrific and loving son is responsible for my kingsnake interrests in general. Being the pet keeper and breeder in my family, from about the time I could walk I have been interested in about any creature that comes my way, keeping and raising all types of small animals including New Zealand Red rabbits from champion bloodlines, and fish. You name it, and I have most likely kept one or more as a pet or part of a breeding group... many of the pets I brought in from outdoors as a kid were of course hidden from my parents

Needless to say, raising my only son it was an absolute must that he and I enjoy ourselves by constantly going to pet shops, breeder shows, breeding facilities and such to pick out our next critters. And of course going to as many zoos as possible was a must! I still love doing that, although my son is now grown and a father-to-be himself with a strapping baby boy on the way to us soon, so I travel to zoos with my sweetie who is an animal lover and reptile keeper herself. She's the turtle girl in the family now and she is quickly becoming fascinated with our kingsnakes... she loves working with the babies.

A number of years ago, while my son was still quite young, we were making our usual rounds to all the coolest pet facilities when he spotted a beautiful Sinaloan Milksnake. Well... he just had to have that baby snake(and who am I as a good father to say no? lol!). Soooooo..... we promptly began doing our homework to learn all we could about caring for that baby Sinaloan, we gathered up all the necessary husbandry items and raced off to that snake facility and brought his baby snake home! Now, being divorced and my son living with his mother you can easily imagine how pops was responsible for caring for that baby snake when my son wasn't around. Time passed, and me being who I am, I fell in love with the kingsnake/milksnake keeping hobby and before we knew it we had ourselves a stable full of kingsnakes. I sure love that son of mine, we are like the best buds ever!

Having naturally been interested in breeding anything I ever kept that was possible to breed, the next step for me was obviously to lay down a plan for a kingsnake breeding project. By this time I had done all my studies and kept about every kingsnake that interested me, and by far my ultimate dream was to work with thayeri. At last! My next animal breeding project! I had just gotten away from tropical fish and needed something... my son had found it for me.

So I took my time, determined who the very best thayeri breeders were and began building my dream thayeri collection to work with. And here I am! You should see the extreme joy and excitement on my son's face now when he pops in to see what's going on... and I wish you could feel the joy and excitement that I feel when he and I are together there. Life is very very good!

Enjoy your new thayeri when they arrive Rose, you made a very good decision in both choosing thayeri to work with, and the bloodline of your first animals. You are in for a real treat indeed!

I hate to tell you, but you really have no idea just how bad of an addiction you are in for. lol. My first two were a pair of 04's from Tim also, and he is such a nice guy to deal with. He has some absolutely gorgeous Thayeri, and you will soon discover that alot of the folks on here do as well. A friend of mine, Michelle Rogers, kept telling me for the longest time about Thayeri, and their awesome color variations, but for some reason I just didn't pay that much attention, but when I finally got that first pair I went loco. I have even put off bills to buy some Thayeri I wanted. In just a little more than a year I've managed to aquire a collection of 10.9 with 11 being breedable this spring. I can't wait to hatch out some babies of my own. I've bred Cal Kings before, but this upcoming season will be my first to breed Thayeri. You are in for a very enjoyable ride with these snakes, and you will also enjoy this forum. Everyone here is extremely nice, and would love to answer any questions you have. You couldn't find a more knowledgeable group of people to talk about Thayeri with than on here. I'm pretty new here also, and I've learned alot already. Good luck with your new babies. I'll look forward to the pics when you get them in.

You're in good hands here, Rose! Even though I am a lurker to this forum and a newbie to mexicana kings, I live very close to John's candy store and can tell you these are some of the most beautiful snakes around! I have one Thayeri, Uno, who has a spade shape on his side, hence his name, and him being my first. I think I will get another pair next year, 'cause Uno's been a very good boy and should be rewarded! Looking forward to pics soon!
