Substrate Poll

DanM Jul 20, 2003 05:14 PM

I was just wondering what kind of substrate everyone uses and where they purchase the substrate. Thanks!

I use paper towels for babies, and playsand for adults

after finding my dragon got coccidia
I have switched to non-slip shelf liner.

some pros to it:

1) water proof.
2) not to expensive.
3) easy to get at stores.

easy to cleanup, no hiding places for bugs, food or poop.

can be removed and cleaned with soap/bleach etc... and re-used when fully cleaned.

costs me about $3.00 a roll, for a not quite 3'x3' coverage it takes 1 roll plus one part of another ( 3 strips with overlap)

it has a texture so the dragon can grip it. but not rough.

it's vinal, not paper, not treated with any pesticide
if you go to find it look in housewares next to shelf paper.

I use reptile carpet. It's washable and I don't have to worry if they knock something out of their dish and eat it off the bottom of the cage.

I've been using washed play sand but I really don't like it. It has too much dust and contains silicate. If I could get tropical white sand here in MO, I would try that. Keep the ideas coming. I'm ready to try something new.
Take care,
Karen

Does anyone use pea gravel? I'm setting up a cage right now and I read on a couple dragon caresheets that pea gravel can be used. I was kind of concerned with using sand as it is easy and small enough to swallow and the pea gravel is pretty large. The pea gravel also looks really nice in the cage setup with about 8 creek rocks placed throughout the cage.

If pea gravel isn't a good idea, I can always switch before I get the dragons. I really don't want paper towel or newspaper because it's just not pretty for a nice enclosure. I have my boa on newspaper but her cage is just a cage or home and not a presentation cage where people can watch and view the animal.

I used paper towel for my guy up to about a week ago when I switched to plastic table cloths. I was going to use washed playsand but felt it would be too much of a hassel, especially considerig it comes in a 50 pound bag I would have to lug from my car into the house, then lug it downstairs. Following which I would need to lug up pails of sand when I changed and washed the cage...decided it wasn't worth the trouble so I bought the plastic tablecloth. It was on sale, 100 feet x 3' roll for about $20. As it is plastic, it is easy to clean up and you can buy whatever colour or pattern you like. Also, it does have a bit of a texture so my dragon can move about on it easily.

Wheat Bran. Its cheap, light weight, edible, and looks very nice. I'm surprised I was the first person to mention this, I thought it was very popular.
