Japanese (Kunashir Island) Ratsnakes

aggrocroc Oct 08, 2005 02:04 AM

Hello all,
I'm looking for people who work with Japanese ratsnakes (E. climacophora), epsecially the Kunashir(sp?) Island variety. Any info. or helpful hints to their care would be great. Also, where can I get any......any breeders that anyone knows of? I'm here in SE PA, so I'd prefer that it'd be someone local or someone at least who is at the local herp shows. I like to see my snakes before I buy them.....still haven't gotten over fears of "mail order animals"! Thanx ahead of time for any and all help.

Larry Keller at Prairie Land Reptiles has them. I think he has cornXjapanese hybrids right now. I have no earthly idea what would be going through someones head to cross those two, or any hyridizing for that matter. Anyway, I got a pair from him and they are great. Very laid back animals, eat like crazy, and getting very nice tourquise color.

I live in southwestern Pa., and recently got a couple Japanese ratsnakes from Ben Siegel, who advertises in the kingsnake classifieds...I have to say the experience was a good one; they were very professional and both snakes arrived well packed and in excellent condition...for whatever reason the Japanese ratsnakes don't seem to be very popular or common, so I'm afraid you may have to end up having them shipped to you...I've gotten a number of snakes shipped to me and, knock on wood, have never had a bad experience...everyone came through healthy, and have stayed that way...Good luck...

Ask around at a local reptile show, you might just find someone who has them but doesn't have them right then, or might know someone who does. If you have to go mail order, use the fauna BOI to see what other people's experiences have been with that breeder. Great way to determine if you are getting good stuff, I don't order without looking them up first.
