What exactly is the length of a hatchling/small/yearling/medium/adult?

LadyOhh Oct 08, 2005 05:12 PM

I've been doing my research and I can't seem to find the maximums/minimums of each size of snake.
Yes, I know they are called the sizes for a reason, but, what actually entails being a hatchling other than being just pipped? When does it become small (ie length, weight)?
I ask this because of the racks and sizes that are offered, but they don't clarify what size is what for the snakes themselves.
Call me paranoid, but I don't want to put a small in a hatchling box or anything like that.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

just forget about the "hatchling" cages and get the smalls. Unless you plan on producing mass quantities of babies to sell each year the hatchling racks are a bit small, and often the "hatchling" referrs to hatchling colubrids.

As far as sizes go, it is very variable, but if you are feeding your snakes well(not even powerfeeding just well) they will quickly outgrow the hatchling tub.

By no means am I an expert but heres how I name mine:

neonate - hatch until first meal
hatchling first meal to about 300 grams (up to 4 months)
yearling 300-700 grams (4-6 months)
subadult 700-1000 grams (roughly 6 months to 1 year old)
young adult 1000-1300 grams (roughly about 1 1/2 years)
adult 1300 plus grams (roughly 2 years)

Weights and ages and lengths are so varied from snake to snake so you kind of have to take all of it into consideration.

As for tubs heres how mine are:

4 qt hatchling tubs - up to 200 grams
12 qt tubs - to 500 grams
27 qt tubs - to 700 grams
cb70s - everything over 1000 grams

Anyway hope this helps!

The three (3) basic stages of sexual maturity -- hatchling, juvenile, and adult.

Hatchling: under 500g
Juvenile: 500-1000g
Adult: over 1000g

And the three (3) basic box sizes -- shoe, sweater, and underbed.

Shoe: Sterilite 1754
Sweater: Sterilite 1756
Underbed: Iris CB70

This is simple. This is easy. This is fine.
