KY find last week

DeanAlessandrini Oct 08, 2005 09:51 PM

Last Sunday, Jason and I went to the Louisville Herp Soc. meeting. (some guy did a talk on herping in Cincy)

Anyway...
Before the Herp Meeting, Phil and Will took Jason and I to a few spots.

Although we did not find any rattlesnakes (a small disappointment) we did score this cool and HUGE black eastern hognose ( A lifer for me) and a few other herps.
We found a few longtail sals, one cave sal., 4 black racers, and about 6 or 7 ringnecks...all found by Jason, the "ringneck master"

This hognose was found under a sheet of tin, and we managed to snap a few shots before it went into “play dead” mode.

Here are a few shots of the hoggie:

My favorite pic

A full body shot

…it finally had enough of our pics and went into a full-fledged “I’m dying” mode”

Nice pics Dean, but you guys need to remember that I did find 8 of the 12 serpents.

I am probably the best snake hunter that I know

haha

(Will and Phil - if you guys are reading this, don't go getting your overalls in a bunch, you guys are definately the best cabbage ape hunters I know!)

You are absoultely, postively, beyond the shadow of a doubt,
the very best ringneck snake catcher I have ever known.

Hey, maybe we can start a new section of the GCHS website:

"You might have a ringneck if..."

...you catch a snake that is under 10" (it might be a ringneck)

...the snake you tangle with has only 1 method of self-defense and that is pooping on you. (it might be a ringneck)

...the species you found reprsents 75% of every snake in the state of Kentucky (it might be a ringneck)

...your girlfriend is not afraid to pick the snake up and says it is very "cute" (it might be a ringneck)

and FINALLY...

...the snake is found by none other than Jason Folt.
(it's DEFINATLEY a ringneck!)

"... if you find ringnecks under the car hood laying in your front yard, over in the weeds between they chevy on blocks and the trampoline..."

Oh wait a minute, I think I'm getting mixed up here...

If you don't know the difference between a Ringneck and a Redneck, you've never herped in Appalachia! But as my earlier post indicates, they often occur sympatrically...
