Season Change and Resp Infections

hunterjackson Oct 09, 2005 02:17 AM

It seems like to me, every time we have a change in season, my Sulcata gets a small Resp infection. I always catch it very early because he slows down eating.

This happened this past week, He slowed down eating big time, even crack rock, i mean Mazuri. Went to the Dr., and got Amikacin along with a Vitamin complex. Giving amikacin shots every 3 days (of course soaking him 2-3 times a day to keep him hydrated due to amikacin dehydration).

He's finally eating some more. Im giving him whatever he wants as long as he will eat (within reason). Right now he has a plate of Mazuri with a piece of cactus cut up and stuck in the middle of each piece of mazuri to get some of that in him and then hay stuck to the mazuri so he doesnt have a choice.

Does anyone elese have this problem with seasonal changing?

I had a problem only once when the temps caught everyone by surprise by dropping 50 degrees overnight. Our sulcata got a little sick from that & our vet had a lot of reptile owners in to see her that week. Neither the local weathercasters nor the weather channel predicted that one.
Generally though no we don't have a problem because we usually know by watching the weather channel when temps will change so that we can have the heaters turned on in time.

Mine is young and in doors...it has happened twice. I believe the first time he came with it, maybe this time was only a fluke.

He is in a large tortoise table with a spot of 99-102 and an ambient of 88-92 with cooler areas if he so desires.

When this happened, i noticed a large decrease in apetite and clicking of the throat, so i immediately went to the vet. Amikacin etc. He has 2 doses down, gets them every 3 days, no spur in apetite, but that should be coming back in a day or so now.
