my new adoptee....

herpsaremylife Oct 09, 2005 04:44 PM

a handsome young sulcata, kinda looks like a male to me but may be too young to tell... about 6-7 inches carapace length. active and alert though. my aunts friend found it wandering the streets.

>> my aunts friend found it wandering the streets.

What a shame. I hear more & more stories about them being found wandering the streets or the countryside. Too many people are tossing them aside but it's good that some people are willing to take them in.
Congrats on your new adoptee!

yeah, its disheartening that people would do that, and i dont get it because a baby sulcatta is not a cheap investment why would someone buy one that doesnt even know about them??? it was kinda cool though, i have been researching sulcatta care and desert tortoise care, and reading about adoption, and was trying to convince my mom to let me adopt one of the two species, and then my grandpa calls up telling me my aunt found a desert totoise and i had to see it and i did. it was the sulcatta, and she gave it to me and basically, that decided it for me and my mom.

I'll never understand that either. The one we have was also found. She's pyramided, looked awful when she got her so my guess is that someone bought her then when she started getting too big they decided she was too much trouble. That's NO EXCUSE for tossing them out in the wild in N. America. It just galls me that people do this but I know it happens all the time.
Soon after we adopted ours we found out that a friend of a friend has a male because he found him. A few weeks ago it happened again & now our vet has that one.
People discard every kind of pet you can imagine but I'll never understand how they can do that. It's not a broken TV it's a live creature that has needs. arrggghh it makes me so mad I could go on for days but.. I won't LOL.
I know what you mean about it being decided for you though. I'd wanted a sulcata for years, we have the space & everything they need but I wasn't going to go out & buy one on purpose.. then it turned out I didn't need to anyway. We felt like fate brought her here so we named her Destiny.
You're gonna have some problems now & then with getting it to do what you want it to do, but you're gonna love this pet!

I definitely agree with you both. I to can't understand how people once they have committed to an animal just dump it. Don't they realize its a living , breathing creature and has feelings. sometimes I wish I could do that to them, just dump them naked somewhere and let them fend for themselves.

I work for a reptile rescue in Maine and applaude you both for your rescue's. A sulcata came into our rescue and my heart just melted and I adopted him. He's a male, 5 years old and I was told he weighs 50 lbs. His name is speedy and he's very handsome. I plan to take him to a vet very soon here to make sure that he does not have any problems. He's been with me for two days now.

Your picture is beautiful and you are gonna love him to pieces.

I am quite proud of him and like any new parent I try to show him off whenever I can.

Speedy I was told is 5 years old. I'm trying to find out how to contact the last owner, if I can, to know more about him.

He is going to a qualified reptile vet tomorrow for his check up. I'll let you know how it comes out. I'm curious to find out if he really is 50 lbs, when I pick him up he feels like a ton, and if the vet thinks he looks like he's 5 years old.

I'll bet you can't wait until yourlittle guy grows up.....LOL

Sincerely
Bob
