African House snake

b23ball23 Oct 09, 2005 08:53 PM

i posted this in the what kind? forum, but this is the right place to go

Anyone have any experience with African house snakes.....i like that they are easy to breed, and eat well

I'm afraid that they wont be at the next herp show (western Maryland)

Anyone know any breeders?

I've already talked to chris H. he helped me out...i was wondering if any of you have any experience with AHS's

Thanks

BEN

I just have one question, are you geting a african house snake just because its a easy snake to breed and you want to sell the babys? The chances are they will have them at the reptile show you are going to.

no, i'm sorry i'm asking this question in like 40 places...my bad

probably a bad impression for a noobie for this forum

No i just want a snake that is relatively cheap, and kinda rare

I just like the fact that If I ever want to experience breeding that it wont be too hard

I just have never seen one, thats why i'm worried I wont see one at the show

I guess i'll have to wait and see!!

Sorry for the annoyance

Your not a annoyance i just didnt know if you just wanted money and not for the hobby of keeping snakes, which is what its all about.
Asking questions is a good thing because if you dont find out the information you need then you go get the snake, and dont know how to care for it properly it may die. So its good to ask questions so you can get some good answers.

I have one. Sweet little snake.

I've only been to a few reptile shows in my day and typically they ARE kinda hard to find. However, this isn't a rarity thing, its a money thing. Few people breed them because they aren't a "cash crop" so to speak. They are also pretty plain looking (but don't let that stop you...all living things ahave a beauty of their own), so they aren't highly sought ofter.

When I found mine, there was only a few others for sale at the show...maybe 10 or so if you knew where to look. I bought mine as the only hatcling at the whole place. A whopping $15. Tiny little thing...about the width of my pinky finger nail. Took some looking to find a pinky small enough to choke down, but once she ate a couple, she grew large enough to take the regular sized. She's certainly grown since then.

They are definitely good eaters, although mine frequently goes off feed when approaching a shed. Sometimes for a month.
She's never bit anyone even, when smelling of mice, (but don't hold them by the back of the head), and very curious when taken out.
Unfortunately you also don't see them out on their own alot. She only comes out at night. But she doesn't mind being taken out either.

All in all a GREAT starter snake.
