What kind of filter for fbt???

-ryan- Oct 09, 2005 09:08 PM

Here's the deal. I currently have a bearded dragon, mali uromastyx (both living in big custom built enclosures), and a leopard gecko (who currently resides in a 10 gallon tank). I want to get my leopard gecko a slightly bigger tank. 20 gallon long would be ideal, but for the space open for him, I'll have to do with a 15 gallon tank (still much better than the 10).

So I'll have a 10 gallon tank left over, and I figure what better use for it than to put a 2-3 Fire-bellied toads in it! I plan on having a setup up about 50% land and 50% water (basically just having gravel that slopes out of the water, with some nice places to hide and such up there, etc. etc....I'm sure you guys are more than familiar with what I am trying to accomplish). Anyways, I want to know what kinds of filters would work well for this setup. I kind of have an idea in my head of what I would really like though. Ideally, I would want something that, after filtering the water, sends it out a small hose or tube, so that I could then arrange the end of that hose/tube at the top of a rock pile in a back corner of the tank, creating a small waterfall down to the water. Is there any sort of filter system I could buy/construct that could do this? What other filtering options are there?

duetto makes two sizes of filter and they both can have a hose attached to their outputs. on the box is a diagram of one powering a little waterfall so this sounds like it is exactly what you want. they are also good filters in general. i would get the bigger one(the 100 model) just so you have better filtration.

Thanks for the reply...is this the filter system you're referring to?

Does it come with a hose or something of that sort? Also, what about the 'built in aeration feature? I'd assume that by having the hose not submerged in the water, this feature would be useless? Is aeration necessary for fire belly toads?

Thanks for the info, I think I'll have to see if there's somewhere I can go check this filter out. If I do go with that one, I want to come up with a creative way to sort of hide it (maybe put some sort of plant or something in front of it?).

thats where i found it. your link just took me to petsmart. the 100 is what i would use. the waterfall hose doesnt come with it. the aeration accessory isnt necessary. firebelly toads get enough oxygen from the air, thats their main source. i use either plants or small rocks to hide anything in my tanks, just make sure there is open flow to the filter's intake.
