how often to feed a JCP now

janome Oct 09, 2005 09:18 PM

hi, so my JCP last ate on 9/9. he shed on 9/28. i offered him his normal food of f/t jumbo rat on 9/30. (he has always eaten f/t) would not eat it. so waited another week and tried to feed him again on 10/8.he showed a little interest in it but wouldn't eat it. he went through the motions of what snakes do AFTER they eat...like re-aligning the jaw, etc. but never touched it.
he was a little active the day after his shed so that is why i thought he wanted to eat.
he hasn't been very active since. if they slow down on their feedings during the fall/winter how often should i try to feed him now...if at all??
he is 7 foot now and about 3 1/2 years old. i think he was hatched in 2002 sometime. nothing has changed in his tank. his esu red light did burn out and i got another brand but its more brighter. would that effect him at all? do they actually see the red light.i have it on at night for night time warmth. thanks for any advice please.

If it were me, I would just offer food every couple of weeks. And maybe offer a smaller meal. If he is going off feed it may be because things are cooling down some, and if that is the case it might not be the best for him to take down a jumbo rat. But, that is just me. I have had a couple of carpets slow down or stop feeding in the winter time, and I just keep offering every couple of weeks and one day they just decide it is time to eat again.

thanks for reply. if they slow down and/or stop feeding during the winter is it best to keep the temps the same or lower them. do they go into a hybernation or just become real lazy?

Well, I don't really know for sure what you will want to do. I usually keep my hatchlings/yearlings on a top shelf in my snake room in hopes that they stay the warmest and keep eating, while the adults on the other hand are cooled slightly on the lower levels in my snake room because I want them breeding. I would say the best would be to offer your snake options. Give him a hot side around 90F and maybe let the cool side drop down into the mid 70s at night in case he does want to cool down a bit. That is my .02.
