FL Press: Alligator Eats Cocker Spaniel

Oct 09, 2005 10:05 PM

TAMPA TRIBUNE (Florida) 10 October 05 Alligator Eats Cocker Spaniel (Josh Poltilove)
Riverview: Marisol Davila saw ripples in the pond behind her house but didn't know for sure an alligator lived there. Until last Monday, when the reptile ate Puchi, her 8-month-old cocker spaniel.
Now she wants the 8-foot gator captured and warning signs in front of the pond so people will know it isn't safe.
She said she called the humane society, an alligator tracker and the head of her neighborhood association. But the alligator remains and no signs are posted, she said.
"Now it's a dog. Maybe next time it'll be a human," said Davila, of 6702 Summer Cove Drive.
Davila isn't sure who did it, but she said someone opened her gate Monday, let her dogs out and closed the gate to prevent them from coming back to the yard.
Puchi roamed to the pond beyond Davila's back yard. That's when a neighbor saw the alligator eat Puchi.
The neighbor told Davila's 16-year-old daughter, Gabrimar Riveros, after Riveros returned from school.
"I couldn't take it. I couldn't accept it," Riveros said.
An alligator tracker came to the pond Tuesday but couldn't catch it. The tracker promised to return later in the week but didn't, Davila said.
Davila said she also called Donna Fore, president of the Bloomingdale Ridge Homeowners Association, to request warning signs outside her house.
Fore said signs are on the way.
