GBR Press: Python story ... sort of!

Oct 09, 2005 10:11 PM

Wes Note: Here's your homework for today ... carefully read the press item below and try to determine if the reporter has used inappropriate or alarmist language, or has perhaps been mis-informed as to some facts. You'l probably have to read it 2 or 3 times to find anything! (This is my cynical voice typing!)
respects, Wes

DAILY MIRROR (London, UK) 10 October 05 12ft 'Child Killing' Python On Loose ..In Essex (Aidan Mcgurran)
A 12ft Python which could swallow a young child whole is on the loose in a seaside town, parents were warned yesterday.
A street sweeper spotted it slithering into long grass near shops and alerted the police but almost a week later it still has not been captured.
Dangerous wild animal expert Iain Newby said: "It could easily take down a young child up to the age of about eight or a dog the size of a Labrador."
The monster snake, spotted in Shoeburyness, near Southend, Essex, is thought to be an escaped pet.

The press always runs to hyperbole with snake stories. Like snake-infested, or crocodile-infested. They never mention people-infested cities, do they? Like whoever the reporter was on the burmese/gator story. I doubt the snake "exploded". Someone made an off-the-cuff comment, and the reporter ran with it. Sensationalism sells papers.....
