Bed-A-Beast and frogs

jleahl Oct 10, 2005 06:32 AM

When we first got our White's a few weeks ago I put in sphagnum moss for a substrate. But it was hard to clean, grew mold, and is costly to replace. So I got some bed-a-beast last week and changed out his substrate. The coconut fiber tends to stick to him, and the little gray treefroglets I have in a different tank. Is this a problem? The White's did get his mouth full of fiber when he was eating, too; my son watched him trying to get it out with his front feet. Can he get impacted from this?

i recommend bed-a-beast for most frogs and as far as i know shouldnt cause impaction. the only way it could would be on really small turtles. i would switch the froglets over to wet paper towels. they cant eat it but it will hold the humidity nice and high. it shouldnt bother them for it to stick to them. they are usually good about wiping it out of their mouths too. once the froglets are bigger you can switch them back to bed-a-beast.

Thanks for your reply! I just dumped a bunch of flightless fruit flies in with the froglets...I don't think they know what do do with them! My local guy will be getting Pheonix worms in tomorrow, so I'll try those, too. I'll make the switch to paper towels after there aren't quite so many fruit flies crawling around....
