Ghost story.... A Ripping tale of fear, tragedy and terror...

DC Jul 20, 2003 07:52 PM

...most of it mine LOL. Ghost went for a little run today while I was moving him back inside from his sunning enclosure. He did that "explode out of your hand" thing while I was transferring him to the other container, and got to motor about 20 yards flat out into a chick grow-out pen. He got smooth away while I was sliding about 8 feet in the damp grass after attempting to cut him off LOL. I lost my eye contact with him while I was floundering around in the yard, and thought he went under an open-ended barrel that is on its side for a chick shelter. Carefully pick up the barrel....no Ghost. After looking everywhere in the surrounding area and wild growth of the across-the-fence pasture, I figure he has gone native. No trace, and its thich undergrowth outside the lawn area. I go inside slamming doors, and about 10 minutes later The Better Half comes in with an aqua blue lizard in her hand. He ran INTO the barrel LOL. She got all the war story points, since he gave her a nice "trial bite" when she reached in to get him. Ain't love great LOL. Ghost is fine now, back with his beloved Brutus. Whew!

The feeling when a lizard escapes, or anything escapes, for that matter. I imagine it would be worse if you live somewhere where you know it might not survive.

Once I had a wc male outside for some pictures. I put him down on the sidewalk about 30 minutes before I had to be at work. I agree, they do have some explosive take offs. He also ran bipedally about 20 yards before making it to the thicket line between my house and my neighbors. My diving grab made no difference...just a clump a grass. I went through the same "door slamming" tantrum you described, but gave one last effort before heading back to work (grass-stained and bruised). There he was cool as a cucumber (;P) hiding in the grass about 5 yards on the neighbors side of the thicket.

The second time I was prancing around the yard with Chili in my hand. My neighbor was out, and I was on my way to show her my newest lizard. About half way there, he slipped from my hand, and made it to my upper arm, then shoulder. Before I knew it, he was on the middle of my back planning his leap to freedom. He played "draco draco" for a few feet, then ran (again about 20 yards; strange) all the way back towards the pen. I thought, "How cute, he wants back in the pen." Ha, ha...he was headed towards the farthest darkest corner of my deck...the underside of it. Lucky for me, the lattice was not on yet, so I was able to crawl under and scare him back even farther. With some effort, I was able able to get him back into my hands and back to the pen. The neighbor lady would have to walk to my yard from now on.
