How do you like your eggs?

redbeard92 Oct 10, 2005 02:04 PM

Hi,

My "male" caiman of almost 10 years just laid eggs today....that could explain the appetite loss.

Fortunately they were laid in the water and should be relatively easy to remove, rather than on land, where I would have to climb in and retreive - she's not in the best of moods...

I will borrow a digital and try to post a few shots.

I just removed the eggs, there are 19 all together. Amazing how hard the shells are, they sound almost like concrete when they clink together.

Since she had stopped eating, yet was retaining such a large girth, I was concerned that there may be some sort of intestinal blockage with the accompanying gas/bloat build up.

Now she just looks like a skinny caiman that hasn't eaten in awhile!

Anyone know how long the aggressive/defense response remains after a cluch of eggs are removed?

You must be very proud of your girl! However, only one thought has crossed my mind. When was the last time she was housed with another caiman? I didn't know that you had two.

Don't have another caiman, but I did forget to latch the iguana's cage one night...hmmmmm.

Seriously though, isn't it strange that this happened after all these years. I guess if I had some sand she would have buried them, but instead decided to drown them.
