I think your example refers to C. variegatus and C. mitratus, in which case I'd say "no," at least for wild populations. As far as subspecies of variegatus goes, I'd venture a guess that they do, i.e. intergradation zones between subspecies are probably larger than the normal schools of thought estimate.
Personally, I wish "they'd" do away with variegatus subspecies, since for the most part the distinctions between said subspecies are almost entirely based on subtle variations in pattern, and I've seen specimens from locales supposedly belonging to one subspecies which look more like a different subspecies etc.
