I work at a manufacturing facility in south Ga. Last Fri., some workers killed a "moccasin" inside the plant near a shipping door. I told them it was probably a banded water snake, but when I saw the cell phone pics of the dead snake on one of the guys' phone, I couldn't be sure. It was about four feet long and was either a cottonmouth or a large water snake. The dead snake was discarded after it was killed, so there's no way to be sure. But from the guys' description of its behavior (striking repeatedly, head held high with mouth agape)while they beat it to death, I wonder. We're located near some prime cottonmouth habitat (cypress swamp & boggy creek), but the snake would have had to travel quite some distance over highways, a parking lot, and large mantained lawns. I've never had such a close encounter with a moccasin before, and I know a lot of goobers around here assume any large, dark-colored snake without rattles is a "moccasin". But would one wander this far from its preferred habitat? Your comments, please.
