What do you think about dirt for a substrate

jasonmattes Oct 10, 2005 05:37 PM

I use it for a few other snakes..mainly the atb's and it works really well for humidity and looks nice also. I was thinking of trying it on my burms.
What do you think?
I dont see any reason it wouldnt work fine but its always nice to get others opinions...

Hey Jason,

I personally don't see a problem with it. However, heres an idea you might want to consider. Rob Carmichael gave me this recommendation.

Heres the link to the post:

Hope this helps,

That sounds like a nice idea..except i'm not sure what torpedo sand is..
Did you end up using this mix for your snakes?

Carmichael Oct 11, 2005 08:29 AM

Torpedo sand is like a fine grade of gravel and sand mixed together....it looks very natural and is heavy/dense enough to keep urates from getting to the bottom of the cage. When mixed with top soil, ESU Mix, and a nice layer of treated dead leaves, it looks great. We have been using this mix for our burm exhibit for a few months now and so far, it has worked magnificently; easy to clean, looks natural, shows off the animals well, and, this substrate can maintain amazing humidity levels. We have several large garbage cans full of the "mix" that is always ready to go. If you don't have access to torpedo sand, any sand (including beach or sandbox type) will work; you don't need to use a lot of it with the entire mix and you can probably even forego it if you can't find it.

I'll give it a try....thanks for the input

Jason,

Actually, I haven't had an opportunity to try the mix yet. I will be trying it once I build her adult enclosure. When I do that, I will be switching to this mix.

Best Wishes,

Chris
