Big Common w/ Little Common Snapper

tacubaed Oct 10, 2005 07:10 PM

hey guys,

I have two common snapping turtles. The little one is about 1 1/2 inches (shell) and the bigger one is around 3 inches (shell). Well, my question is could I put them both together in the same tank?(40 breeder) If so, are there any precautions I must take before putting them in the same tank together?

Thanks,

Diego

my 4-5" common snapper is in with a 3" penninsula cooter and a 3" western painted turtle, also in a 40breeder. they are fine together. i keep everyone well fed on pellets only. there are goldfish too but no one can catch them. if they are well fed and have their own hiding areas they may be okay, but even if they were the same size you could have problems, so there is no guarantee either way. try it, see how they interact. if they ignore eachother it will probably be okay. then just keep an eye on them both. just be prepared to seperate if necessary.

I don't think it is worth "trying it out". Snappers prefer to be isolated from other turtles even their own species. Also once your snappers get a little stronger, one bad incident could really cause some harm. Like a tail or foot being bit off.

I would suggest getting two separate tanks. You will need to upgrade in the future anyways. It's just not worth the risk.

What if the the bigger one is a male and the 1 1/2 inch is a female? Could they still be put together? Or they would still fight? By the way, is a 1 1/2 inch common turtle to little to tell its sex? The description is that its tail is about the same size as its shell. So, any quesses?

I'll try to get some pictures next time.
