Newt - looks bloated, not going deep

Here to ask a question on behalf of my fiancee who has two fire bellied newts in her kindergarten classroom. Tonight, one of them was *looking* a little bit bloated, and it was swimming just below the water surface but either couldn't go to the bottom or didn't want to. The other newt in the same tank was swimming crawling around the bottom as seems normal.

Is this a problem, and if so, is it common? Any advice would be appreciated.

Bloat is a common problem for newly-acquired firebellies. But it may be less serious than that. Sometimes newts will float for a while, then be fine. The animal will be less stressed by this if there are floating plants or a submerged platform to rest on. Here are some links that might be helpful:
